Love-god and the God of Love
I hear of a God of love.
They tell me of a God who loves me unconditionally.
But they also tell me that the same god who loves me unconditionally will reject me if I don’t love him back.
If I don’t believe in their god of love he will turn into a god of hate.
Love-god hates his enemies, don’t you know.
I thought we were told to love our enemies unconditionally.
If they try to kill us we must love them.
But those rules don’t apply to Love-god of course.
Love-god can do whatever he wants, and you’re wrong to say no.
You can’t say no even if you want to anyway.
Your choices are already made for you.
Love-god chose to hate you forever and ever and ever.
He will hate you for rejecting him, and he made the decision that you would reject him.
Free choice is just an illusion, don’t you know that Love-god is sovereign?
Love-god is such a loving god that the reason he hates you so much is just because he arbitrarily wants to!
You’re really just a terrible person don’t you know — a disgusting insect in the palm of his hands, and he’s about to kill you.
You will enter the Darkness and be eternally punished for the heinous crime of being the wrong type of pot.
But don’t worry!
Jesus has been slaughtered on the altar of Love-god to show those who he so wonderfully chose to be deserving of his love how much he loves them.
To those special few, they get a preview of what happens to the rest of humanity that Love-god will torture forever — how lucky!
In the midst of Love-god’s hatred, I hear the quiet No! of the God of Love.
No! No! No!
The true God of Love cries out through the corpse of Jesus and transforms Him as a seed transforms into a flower.
How can a loving Father cast away His children, let alone torture them forever?
If a good father wouldn’t poison his child when asked for food, how much less would a good Father ravage His children.
The God of Love stands against Love-god for all humans are the object of His love.
Even when those who consider themselves His enemies rage against Him, He is laying down His life for them.
How could the God of Love see His beloved children as insects to be killed when He has crowned them with glory and honour.
He breathes Himself into them, and they are animated by His Spirit.
His dolls of dust come to life full of Him and reflect His goodness.
Love overflows from His lips into our lungs as He sustains the fragile beings we are.
Love flows out of His side and into our cups as we drink deeply, as we break Him into pieces and eat.
He continues to animate us to life and Love.
The selfish Love-god who hoards all the glory and refuses to share even with his handful of special toys is overcome through the true God of Love who freely bleeds Himself dry and yet never is found empty.
But what about that terrible Darkness that many enter into?
What about punishment and hatred and death and despair and gnashing and weeping?
Don’t our enemies have to be destroyed?
Enemies they may see themselves, but the God of Love has no true enemies.
The God of Love protects His dolls of dust from their own fragility, but not everyone wants this protection.
There may be many that wander far into the foreign land without protection, and slowly they discover that to dust they shall return.
They look back at the life-giving kingdom of the God of Love and mourn, cursing themselves for leaving and cursing God that He would let them leave.
But the God of Love is waiting.
The gates will stand open for eternity in the land of the eternally shining Son.
Waiting for those dolls of dust to follow the scattered breadcrumbs that lead back to the palace gates where their Father will embrace them with open arms.
Waiting for those He loves, He shines a beacon to draw them back.
Loving for all eternity all He has created.
Waiting and Loving.
